5 Signs Your Postpartum Recovery Is Going Well (And 3 That Mean You Need Help)

Most mothers have no idea what "normal" postpartum recovery actually looks like. Here's a clear, honest guide — no toxic positivity, no alarming you unnecessarily.
Most new mothers receive almost no guidance on what postpartum recovery actually looks like. You're discharged from hospital with a newborn, a handful of prescriptions, and very little else.
Here are 5 signs your recovery is on track — and 3 signs it's time to ask for help.
Signs You're Recovering Well
1. Your lochia is changing colour
Postpartum bleeding (lochia) typically starts red, moves to pink or brown within a week, and becomes yellowish-white by 4 weeks. If yours is following this pattern, your uterus is healing as expected.
2. Your energy is gradually returning
Not dramatically — you have a newborn. But if you notice small improvements week by week, that's a good sign. Complete, crushing exhaustion that doesn't improve at all after 6 weeks warrants a conversation with your doctor.
3. Your wound is healing cleanly
Whether you had a C-section or perineal stitches, the area should feel less painful each week. Some itching is normal as tissue heals.
4. You're having moments of feeling like yourself
Even brief ones. A laugh, a conversation, a meal you enjoyed. These matter.
5. Your appetite is returning
Especially important if you're breastfeeding — your body needs significant additional calories to produce milk.
Signs You Need Help
1. Bleeding that soaks more than one pad per hour
This is a medical emergency. Call your doctor immediately or go to emergency care.
2. Mood symptoms that last more than two weeks
Crying, anxiety, rage, numbness, or feeling disconnected from your baby — if these persist beyond two weeks and interfere with daily life, this is postpartum depression, not baby blues. It is treatable. Please ask for help.
3. Fever above 38°C
Combined with pain, redness, or unusual discharge, this can indicate infection. Don't wait — call your doctor.
Recovery is not linear. Some days will feel harder than others. But if you're unsure whether what you're experiencing is normal, always ask. There are no silly questions in the postpartum period.
